Christmas officially gets underway in the city when The Lord Mayor, Councillor Frank Jonas, officially turns on the Guildhall Square Christmas tree lights along with approximately 1200 local schoolchildren on Monday, December 3 from 6.30pm.
A countdown will be held for the switch on and then the children, who are from 28 different schools across Portsmouth, will sing carols on the Guildhall steps. Father Christmas will enter the square in a horse drawn carriage.
The Salvation Army Portsmouth Citadel Band will provide the music with a conductor from the Portsmouth Schools’ Music Service leading the carol singing.
Each school has been asked to donate two presents, which will be given out to disadvantaged children across the city after the event.
