Highbury College ‘Get into Music’ at Portsmouth Guildhall

Students on Highbury College’s Level 3 Music Technology course are completing a week of real life work experience and learning from industry professionals at Portsmouth Guildhall this week.

For their ‘Music Events Management’ unit, students are participating in workshops taking advice from key members of staff at Portsmouth Guildhall, who have worked within the industry for years, about how to deliver a music event.

From initial enquiry, to delivery, marketing, contracts, budgets, health and safety and how to run an event, students will put the knowledge they have learnt into practice and apply it to their own music event which will take place at the end of term.

The week is part of Portsmouth Guildhall’s ‘Get into Music’ programme, an initiative developed by Portsmouth Cultural Trust (the operators of Portsmouth Guildhall) in partnership with Creative & Cultural Skills and Creative Choices, supported by the Southern Co-Operative, aimed at providing young people with knowledge and experience in the technical and backstage music industry.

Portsmouth Guildhall’s Learning & Participation Manager, Hayley Reay, says “This has been a fantastic opportunity for the students of Highbury College. To have real life experience to enhance their creative course and learn from people who have been in the industry for over 30 years is really valuable. The Guildhall’s Participate programme is embedded in everything we do - music, art and culture have the ability of inspiring and exciting young people and we aim to do this through a series of opportunities”.

Highbury College are now taking applications for their Level 2 and Level 3 courses in Music Technology. See their website for details, www.highbury.ac.uk
