Portsmouth Guildhall takes to the road with Creative Careers Roadshow for schools!

This week over 200 young people were visited in their schools by the Learning & Participation team of Portsmouth Guildhall, where they participated in an interactive presentation about the Cultural Sector and the wide range of career choices available to them within it.

Using video footage produced by Strong Island Media and discussions led by experienced practitioners Ben Clabon and Patrick Wallace, students in years 7-11 were introduced to the variety of roles on offer from technical, to front of house and marketing and the different pathways into the industry including Apprenticeships, Further and Higher Education, work experience and volunteering opportunities.

The free of charge sessions were taken up by a number of schools locally including Crofton School, Milton Cross Academy, Springfield School and Admiral Lord Nelson School with teachers receiving a resource pack to enable further practical workshops around aspiration building for their pupils.

Learning & Participation Manager for Portsmouth Guildhall, Hayley Reay said, “It has been a fantastic week meeting young people who are eager and excited about their future careers. It is great to be able to share our knowledge with them and offer the support and opportunities the students need to succeed on their chosen path”.

Students in Year 11 from Admiral Lord Nelson’s BTEC Acting course expressed their appreciation of the sessions saying, “I have learnt a lot about the different options and what skills I need to develop to be able to do the job I’d like when I’m older”.

Following the success of its first Creative Careers Roadshow, Portsmouth Guildhall is already planning to repeat the event next year with teachers advised to register their interest now.

The Guildhall is also planning its fourth Creative Choices Day on 24th January 2018, where pupils from Year 9 up to those in Further Education can spend a day at the Guildhall participating in hands-on, practical workshops with the chance to try out jobs for themselves. These popular sessions are now available for teachers to book online at: http://www.portsmouthguildhall.org.uk/guildhall-participate/creative-choices-day.
