With his live performance at the Portsmouth Guildhall, a street named after his latest novel and The Ocean at the End of the Lane being BBC Radio 4’s ‘book at bedtime’, it truly is a time to welcome home Portsmouth’s very own literary genius.
Portsmouth’s home-grown star Neil Gaiman is a busy man. After making the evil Cybermen scary again in the epic Doctor Who episode he wrote earlier this year, Gaiman is to return to his hometown on Sunday 18th August for an evening of storytelling at the beautiful Portsmouth Guildhall. Here, he will be celebrating the publication of his new novel: The Ocean at the End of the Lane. This will be Neil's first novel for adults since the Sunday Times bestseller Anansi Boys in 2005. He will be signing all copies of The Ocean at the End of the Lane plus one backlist title. This is an opportunity not to be missed and tickets are only £6 so make sure you book here.
Gaiman’s new novel will appear to physically manifest as on the same day as his visit to the Guildhall, a street in Portsmouth is to be renamed after him. With a novel titled The Ocean at the End of the Lane, the chosen street had to be near the seafront. But the council have ensured that the roadway named after the first adult novel Gaiman has written since 2005 points directly at the ocean – or at least the English Channel.
Cabinet minister Lee Hunt said that “we want to encourage a love of literacy among our young residents, and with Neil's global following, hopefully this new name will put Portsmouth on the book lover's map", adding: "Neil's connection to the city strengthens our aspirations to promote Portsmouth as the home of great writing."
Finally, Neil’s novel will be part of the ‘Book at bedtime’ series on BBC Radio 4 in five parts from 8th July until the 12th July at 22:45 daily . The Ocean at the End of the Lane will be read by actor and Gaiman fan, Michael Sheen, and this will be a fantastic opportunity for listeners around the country to enjoy Gaiman’s latest story.
