Looking forward to the mix of great shows we have coming to the Guildhall Studio this year

Portsmouth Guildhall Studio

Since launching in October 2018, Portsmouth Guildhall’s new Studio, supported by Victorious Festival, has bought an eclectic new mix of entertainment to the city including comedy, drama, family theatre and dance with an exciting music offer which is very different to that for which the Guildhall is historically known

To date our studio audiences have been treated to an array of top productions, ranging from family theatre, to live music. Whether it is surreal and enchanting music performed by Los Pacaminos, to family theatre shows such as the Adventures of Bo Peep, the Guildhall studio has hosted some great shows. From the hilarious South Coast Comedian of the Year contest, to hosting Touching – a new play created by local talent, we have enjoyed every minute of hosting the Portsmouth community in our new studio, and from what our audiences have said, we thing you might have as well.

LOOKING FORWARD WHAT’S ON:

With a great season behind us, we are not stopping now. In the coming months, audiences can expect first-rate comedy, inclusive, educational and hilarious family theatre, spell-binding and entertaining live music and some new and exciting fringe theatre.

First-Rate Comedy
This season we are opening our doors to the likes of the Laugh Out Loud Comedy Club, kicking off from 20th July. For those who are not familiar with this show yet, every show hosts four top professional comedians, designed to make you laugh, including top TV comedians and the ‘best of the rest’ from around the world. If that’s not enough, there is a full bar service and two interval breaks for you to refill your glasses. Perfect for friends, colleagues or even dates!

You might have seen the ‘Eyebrow Guy’, Gary Meikle on Facebook, or you might’ve caught him supporting Jason Mansford on his ‘Muddleclass’ tour. Either way, the Scottish comedy award winner is not worth missing out on, with his new set and new rants about eyebrows… and the like! Happening 6th July.

Lastly, award-winning comedian, James Alderson finally brings his solo show to our doors on the 17th January, following sell-out runs across the UK. ‘Bring Back The 80s’ is the show that begs the question whether the 80s better than now? Do we remember it all through rose tinted glasses, or shall we all fund a time machine, and go back forever?

Family Theatre
Adding to our versatile line-up, we have some brilliant family theatre shows hitting our studio in the months to come. Shows like The Bonkers Balloon Science show, showing on the 21st July, perfect for those little ones who are eager to learn and get creative whilst doing it. Full of thrills and spills, pops and bangs. The audience will help set up experiments and make lots of predictions on what they think might happen!

Live Music
Along with our mix of entertainment in the studio we have a range of live music booked in. This includes the like of Kiki Dee and Carmelo, who have been touring their spellbinding acoustic live show across the UK and Europe for nearly two decades. Performing in this stripped back fashion allows each of their exceptional talents to shine through and create a wonderful and warm sense of intimacy for the audience, happening 25th October.

Geno Washington and the Ram Jam Band is joining us for our brilliant season coming up. Get ready to be electrified by the ‘King of Soul’ himself as he thrills and entertains audience members with his full band. This show is cabaret style seating, so be ready for an intimate and exciting gig. Playing on 3rd November.

Great Theatre
In amongst the live music, the family productions and the comedy, we have thrown some brilliant fringe theatre into the mix. Get ready for Cherry Trotter and the Dark Room of Secrets. This twisted tale is a parody show based on one of the worlds most popular novels, with a very adult twist.

We are also delighted to welcome to the studio, Max and Ivan – Commitment. This show follows the true story of the unreasonable lengths one best man will go to give one groom the greatest weekend of his life. Directed by three-time Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee Kieran Hodgson.

The rescheduled Police Cops in Space is back on 11th September to take you on a journey through the cosmos. Coming from a total sell out run at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2017, join The Pretend Men in their 80s ‘low-sci-fi’ play set in the most dangerous place on Earth… space.

COME AND VISIT US AT THE GUILDHALL STUDIO

An intimate and contemporary performance space, Guildhall Studio is already proving popular due to the quality and choice the new programme offers. Associate Producer and Programmer for the Studio, Benjamin Clabon said,

“We are delighted with how the Studio has been received by the city and is very quickly establishing itself as a cultural hub in the heart of the community. Through our partnership with Victorious Festival we are also developing a platform for emerging creative talent in our region”.
